snapp - International Good Design Award 2011

Supplier Press Releases

Johannesburg-based snapp Design was awarded a highly coveted, international Good Design Award at the end of 2011 for their signature cutting board called ‘slice’. The sleek design of ‘slice’ includes a mirrored wedge sliced from each side of the classic wooden chopping board, creating a clever funnel effect for foodstuffs.

Amongst designers, Good Design Awards – established in 1950 and bestowed by The Chicago Athenaeum – are referred to as the ‘Oscars’ of the industrial design industry.

“We were really pleased with the outcome of the design and finish of ‘slice’ and wanted to see how we fare in the eyes of international design critics. As Good Design is the most prestigious global award for excellence in product design, we felt it was apt. Winning the award gives us as South African designers the credibility that what we produce is both recognised and appreciated in the international design arena,” says Jonathan Fundudis, head designer of snapp Design.

“It is a huge honour to be acknowledged by our design peers and the reassurance of attaining our vision for being respected as a globally distinctive brand. As there are thousands of entries from around the globe, including renowned international companies, we feel proud to be able to showcase South Africa as a design contributor.”

Awards and acknowledgement

snapp is no stranger to accolades having been nominated for various awards over the past few years, including ‘Finalist for Most Beautiful Object in South Africa’ at Design Indaba 2010 for their ‘twi-light’ table lamp. snapp have also won a few interesting design competitions which have had positive impact and influence on humanity. From soccer to scrabble and charity awareness, snapp designed the ‘Man of the Match’ trophy for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, a celeb scrabble trophy for Top Billing and a public ‘ubuntu bench’ for a campaign against violence towards women and children.

While snapp was established in 2001, the snapp Design founders Jonathan Fundudis and Renko Nieman also have a sister company – an award-winning design consultancy called Envizij – in which they create designs for big brands. Nine years later, at Design Indaba 2010, they achieved their dream when they launched their own range of homeware products, titled ‘inception collection’. “We decided to explore our own creative freedom, and so we expanded into the tangible market with products as our medium,” says Jonathan.

New range at Design Indaba 2012

snapp Design will again be at Design Indaba, with a free-standing island display and a new range of eight, as yet unannounced, inspiring products. With a lot of the local design community producing craft-based products, snapp is differentiating itself with a more global design language. The new items include a fun cork-based range plus kitchenware, lighting and snapp’s first ever furniture pieces.

The new collection is about affordable exclusivity. snapp is excited for the public to experience their latest lifestyle designs which will be available to purchase at the Design Indaba in early March.
